Crystal Palace denied Liverpool their perfect start this season with a dramatic 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park, courtesy of Eddie Nketiah’s stoppage-time volley. The win not only ended Liverpool’s five-match streak but also left Palace as the only unbeaten side in the Premier League.
From the early stages, Palace looked the more dangerous outfit. Ismaïla Sarr converted after a contested set-piece to open the scoring. Although Federico Chiesa struck back at 87 minutes for Liverpool, the script wasn’t over. Deep in added time, Palace caught Liverpool napping: a long throw forced confusion in the box, and Nketiah volleyed home the winner after 97 minutes.
Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, conceded that Palace “deserved” the win. He acknowledged his side were under pressure not only from set-pieces but also from Palace’s clever transitions and open play threats. On Alexander Isak’s debut, Slot defended his performance: “He was close to a goal… got a little shirt pull … didn’t score, but quite a good performance.” Despite a better second half for Liverpool, Slot said, “If one team deserved to win today it was Palace.”
On the other hand, Palace manager Oliver Glasner was glowing about his team’s effort. He described the first half as “best since I arrived” and underlined the importance of humility: “We’re still in September… being unbeaten counts for nothing.” He praised the group’s resilience and how they shook off the equaliser to “strike again.”
Statistically, Palace had the upper hand for much of the match. Liverpool’s goalkeeping heroics from Alisson kept them in contention, but Palace remained a threat at every turn—especially from set-pieces and counter transitions. The result bumps Palace into second place in the table, with Liverpool still leading but now breathing pressure from behind.
