Ladakh's renowned educationist and climate activist, Sonam Wangchuk, is facing scrutiny over alleged financial irregularities linked to his institutions: the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh (HIAL), the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), and Sheshyon Innovations Pvt Ltd (SIPL).
CBI Inquiry Initiated
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has commenced an inquiry into potential violations of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) concerning these institutions. Sources indicate that discrepancies in bank accounts and fund transfers have been identified, prompting the investigation. Wangchuk confirmed that a CBI team visited his institution approximately ten days ago with an order from the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the alleged FCRA breaches.
Context of Ladakh Protests
This development coincides with escalating protests in Ladakh, particularly in Leh, where demands for full statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule have intensified. The protests, predominantly led by the youth, have recently turned violent, resulting in clashes with security forces. The Union Home Ministry attributes the unrest to "provocative speeches" by Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike since September 10, advocating for the region's autonomy. He ended his strike following the violent incidents.
